One day
This phrase sets the scene for a specific event in the life of Zechariah, emphasizing the divine timing and intervention in the narrative. It suggests a moment of significance, aligning with biblical themes where God acts at appointed times (Galatians 4:4).
while Zechariah’s division was on duty
Zechariah belonged to the division of Abijah, one of the 24 priestly divisions established by King David (1 Chronicles 24:10). Each division served in the temple for one week, twice a year. This system ensured the orderly worship and sacrifices in the temple, highlighting the structured religious life of Israel.
and he was serving as priest before God
Zechariah's role as a priest involved performing sacred duties in the temple, such as burning incense, which was a symbol of prayers ascending to God (Revelation 8:3-4). Serving "before God" underscores the holiness and reverence required in his duties, reflecting the priestly mediation between God and the people, a type of Christ's ultimate priesthood (Hebrews 7:25).

Grace and peace be unto you, beloved, from God our Father and from our Lord Jesus Christ, who has called us with a holy calling to walk in His light and to serve Him with hearts ablaze for His glory. In this sacred moment, let us turn our hearts to the testimony of Zechariah, the priest, who, as it is written in the Gospel of Luke, chapter one, verse eight, “was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division.” Herein lies a profound summons for each of us, a call to faithful service, steadfast devotion, and unwavering trust in the God who fulfills His promises in His perfect time, even when the world around us seems silent or uncertain.
Consider, dear friends, the scene before us: Zechariah, a man of God, standing in the holy place, offering incense at the altar, fulfilling the duties assigned to him in the temple of the Lord. His service was not born of chance or ambition, but of divine appointment, carried out in the order of his course, with reverence and obedience. Though his life was marked by personal longing and unanswered prayers—for he and Elizabeth were childless and advanced in years—Zechariah remained faithful, tending to his sacred task with diligence. In this, we see a pattern for our own lives: a call to serve God faithfully, in the place where He has stationed us, trusting that His purposes unfold even when our eyes cannot yet see the fullness of His plan.
Beloved, you who dwell in this present age, know that you too are called to a priestly service, for you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, set apart to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Whether your service is in the quiet of your home, the bustle of your workplace, the fellowship of your community, or the solitude of your prayers, it is no less sacred than Zechariah’s offering in the temple. Your life, when yielded to God, becomes an altar where the incense of worship rises, a testimony to His faithfulness in a world that often forgets His name. Let not the routine of your duties or the weight of unanswered prayers dim your devotion, for God sees your labor, and He is working His purposes through you.
The world around us, like the days of Zechariah, is filled with voices that challenge our faith—voices of doubt, distraction, and despair. Yet, as Zechariah stood in the temple, undeterred by the silence of his personal hopes, so must we stand resolute in our calling. The Lord has appointed you to this hour, to this place, to bear His light in a generation that gropes in darkness. Your faithful service, though it may seem small in the eyes of men, is mighty in the hands of God. For it was in the midst of Zechariah’s obedience that the angel of the Lord appeared, declaring that his prayers had been heard, and that God would bring forth a son, John, who would prepare the way for the Savior. So too does God move in your faithfulness, weaving His eternal purposes through your daily obedience.
Let us, therefore, take heart and serve with zeal, knowing that our God is not distant but near, not silent but speaking, not indifferent but sovereign. Zechariah’s story reminds us that God’s timing is not our own, yet His promises are sure. Though he and Elizabeth waited long for a child, God’s delay was not denial; it was preparation for a miracle that would echo through the ages. So it is with you, beloved. The prayers you lift, the service you render, the faith you hold fast—these are not in vain. God is at work, even in the waiting, shaping you, refining you, and preparing you for the greater things He has ordained.
I beseech you, therefore, to persevere in your priestly calling. Let your life be an offering, your words a sacrifice of praise, your actions a reflection of His love. Serve not for the applause of men, but for the glory of God, who sees in secret and rewards openly. When weariness threatens, lean upon the strength of the Holy Spirit, who empowers you to run and not grow weary, to walk and not faint. When doubts arise, anchor your soul in the truth of God’s Word, which stands forever. And when the world tempts you to turn aside, fix your eyes upon Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him.
Beloved, your service is not merely a duty but a privilege, a participation in the divine work of redemption. As Zechariah’s faithfulness paved the way for the forerunner of Christ, so your faithfulness prepares the way for God’s kingdom to be revealed in the lives of those around you. Let your life proclaim that there is a God who hears, who sees, and who acts in His perfect time. May your devotion inspire others to seek Him, your steadfastness encourage the faint-hearted, and your worship draw the lost to the Savior’s embrace.
Stand, therefore, as priests before the Lord, offering the incense of prayer, the sacrifice of obedience, and the testimony of a life surrendered to Him. Trust that He who called you is faithful, and He will fulfill His promises in His time and for His glory. May your service be a sweet aroma to the Lord, and may His peace, which surpasses understanding, guard your hearts as you walk in the beauty of His calling, now and forevermore. Amen.

O Sovereign Lord, Almighty God, Maker of heaven and earth, whose throne is established in righteousness and whose mercy endures forever, we come before You with hearts humbled and expectant, seeking Your face in a world that yearns for Your truth. You are the God who called Zechariah to serve in Your holy temple, as it is written in the Gospel of Luke, chapter one, verse eight, “while he was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division.” In this sacred moment, inspired by his faithful obedience, we lift our voices in fervent prayer, beseeching You to equip us, Your people, to serve You with unwavering devotion, to walk in Your calling, and to trust in Your perfect timing, that Your name may be glorified in all the earth.
Father of all grace, we stand in awe of Your faithfulness, for You appointed Zechariah to his task and met him in the holy place with a promise that changed the course of history. We, too, are called to be Your priests, a holy nation set apart to offer spiritual sacrifices through Jesus Christ, our great High Priest. Grant us, O Lord, the steadfast heart of Zechariah, who served You diligently though his personal prayers lingered unanswered for years. Fill us with Your Spirit, that we may serve You faithfully in the places You have stationed us—whether in homes, workplaces, schools, or quiet corners of prayer—knowing that no act of obedience is small in Your sight.
O God, You see the multitude gathered before You: the weary who labor, the hopeful who wait, the broken who seek restoration, and the steadfast who persevere. We lift them all to Your throne, asking that You would ignite within each soul a zeal to serve You with purity and purpose. When the world’s distractions vie for our attention, when doubt whispers in the silence, when weariness threatens our resolve, be our strength and our shield. Let Your Word dwell richly in us, guiding our steps and renewing our minds, that we may discern Your will and walk in it with courage.
Lord of all creation, we pray for Your church, scattered across the nations, yet united by Your Spirit. Empower us to be a light in the darkness, a city set on a hill, reflecting Your love and truth to a world in need. As Zechariah offered incense in Your presence, may our prayers rise as a sweet aroma, our worship be a pleasing sacrifice, and our lives a living testimony to Your redeeming grace. For those who feel forgotten in their waiting, as Zechariah once did, grant assurance that You hear every cry, see every tear, and are working all things for good according to Your perfect plan.
We intercede, O merciful Father, for those who face trials that test their faith. Strengthen them to serve You still, trusting that Your promises are sure, even when the fulfillment seems distant. For those tempted to turn aside, draw them back with Your lovingkindness. For those who lead, grant wisdom; for those who follow, grant humility; and for all, grant the grace to serve with joy, knowing that our labor in You is never in vain. May we, like Zechariah, find that our faithful service prepares the way for Your mighty works, whether seen in this moment or in the ages to come.
O God of all hope, we marvel at Your faithfulness to Zechariah, whose obedience in the temple led to the birth of John, the forerunner of our Savior. So too, we pray, let our service pave the way for Your kingdom to break forth in the lives around us. Use us, Lord, to draw the lost to Your salvation, to comfort the hurting with Your peace, and to proclaim Your truth with boldness. Let our lives declare that You are the God who hears, who acts, and who fulfills every word spoken by Your mouth.
We plead, O Lord, for Your divine favor to rest upon us, as it did upon Zechariah. Cause our hearts to burn with love for You, our hands to work for Your glory, and our voices to sing Your praises. Guard us from the snares of this world, and keep us steadfast in our calling, that we may be found faithful when You return in glory. Fill us with Your peace, strengthen us with Your might, and guide us with Your wisdom, that our service may be a reflection of Your eternal kingdom.
To You, O God, be all glory, honor, and power, for You alone are worthy. Hear our prayer, sustain us by Your Spirit, and let our lives be a continual offering of worship to You. May Your name be exalted through our faithful service, and may Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. We rest in Your unchanging love, trusting that You who began a good work in us will carry it to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Amen.
