Letters to the Faithful - Psalm 2:8
Berean Standard Bible
Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance, the ends of the earth Your possession.
King James Bible
Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

Ask Me
This phrase highlights the relationship between God the Father and His anointed King, often interpreted as a Messianic prophecy pointing to Jesus Christ. The act of asking signifies a divine promise that requires a response, emphasizing the importance of prayer and communication with God. In the context of ancient Israel, kings would often seek divine guidance and favor, reflecting a dependency on God's will.
and I will make the nations Your inheritance
This promise of nations as an inheritance suggests a transfer of authority and dominion. In the historical context, Israel was surrounded by various nations, often in conflict. The idea of nations as an inheritance implies a future where God's anointed would have authority over all peoples, not just Israel. This is seen as a foreshadowing of the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19, where Jesus commands His disciples to make disciples of all nations, indicating the global scope of His kingdom.
the ends of the earth Your possession
This phrase extends the promise to the entire world, indicating a universal reign. In biblical times, the "ends of the earth" would have been understood as the farthest reaches of the known world, symbolizing total dominion. This is consistent with prophecies in Isaiah 9:7 and Daniel 7:14, which speak of an everlasting kingdom. It also reflects the eschatological vision in Revelation 11:15, where the kingdoms of the world become the kingdom of Christ, affirming His ultimate sovereignty over all creation.

Beloved saints of the Most High God, grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. Today we gather our hearts and minds around a verse of divine majesty and eternal promise—a royal decree spoken from the very mouth of God to His Anointed. “Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.” These are not idle words. They are not poetic exaggerations. This is a prophetic declaration rooted in the eternal counsel of the Godhead and bursting with relevance for the Church of Jesus Christ in this present age.
This verse finds its context in a psalm that opens with trembling thunder: “Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot in vain?” The kings of the earth conspire. The rulers take counsel together. There is defiance, rebellion, a collective shaking of fists at heaven. And yet, seated in unshaken sovereignty, the One enthroned in heaven laughs. He is not anxious. He is not alarmed. He is not confused. He declares with clarity and unbending authority: “I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”
And then, into this scene of conflict and coronation, the voice of the Son breaks forth. He recounts the decree of the Father: “Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.” O Church, do you hear what heaven is saying? Do you grasp the weight of these words? This is not a prayer for possibility. This is a command for dominion. The Father is inviting the Son to lay claim to what is rightfully His—not a corner, not a tribe, not a city, but the nations—the peoples, the languages, the kingdoms—and not just nearby territories, but the ends of the earth.
This is not a promise to an earthly monarch. This is a messianic pronouncement. This is the Father speaking to the Son. This is God the Father pledging to God the Son the total inheritance of creation. And this promise did not die in the psalms; it was carried forward in power and confirmed in resurrection. For when Jesus rose from the dead, He said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” And when He ascended, He sat down at the right hand of God, waiting until His enemies are made His footstool.
But here is the mystery and the marvel—this inheritance, though secured by Christ, is being claimed and collected through His Body, the Church. We are not spectators to this dominion—we are participants. We are not mere recipients of the blessing—we are instruments in the unfolding of this royal decree. When we preach the gospel, we are laying hold of the nations. When we disciple the broken, we are expanding the borders of His possession. When we go to the unreached, when we intercede for the lost, when we stand in the gap for peoples yet in darkness—we are echoing the words of the Father: “Ask of me.”
Let the Church arise in the spirit of this psalm. Let the saints pray as co-heirs with Christ. Let the Church stop praying small prayers to a great King. The Father has said to the Son, “Ask of me, and I will give you the nations.” And now the Son says to the Church, “Go and make disciples of all nations.” The inheritance is not up for debate. The only question is whether we will ask. Will we align ourselves with the desire of the King? Will we labor in the harvest field with vision as wide as the earth and faith as bold as the throne?
Do not be content with comfort when you have been commissioned for conquest. Do not limit your vision to your neighborhood when your King has claimed the nations. Do not hesitate to intercede for unreached peoples, unentered regions, and unbroken chains, for this is the era of expansion. Christ reigns, and His inheritance must be gathered in.
This is not about political empires. This is not about religious domination. This is about the Lamb receiving the reward of His suffering. This is about every tribe, tongue, and nation bowing before the name of Jesus. This is about the earth being filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. And this will not happen by chance. It will not happen by mere religious activity. It will happen as the Church takes up the mantle of Psalm 2:8 and asks.
Let us ask, not out of presumption, but in obedience to divine command. Let us ask, not for selfish gain, but for the fame of His name. Let us ask, not with fear, but with the authority of those seated with Christ in heavenly places. Let us ask for souls. Let us ask for cities. Let us ask for cultures to be transformed. Let us ask for rulers to bow. Let us ask for darkness to be broken. Let us ask for the unreached to be reached and for the gospel to be preached in every tongue.
And when we ask, let us also act. Let us give. Let us go. Let us send. Let us sacrifice. Let us lay down comfort and pick up the cross, for the inheritance is not gathered by ease, but by obedience. The blood of the Lamb was not spilled for a small return. He did not suffer to win the approval of a single nation. He was crucified for the world. He was raised to reign over all. And He shall have what He asked for.
So Church of the living God, lift your eyes. Stretch your faith. Widen your prayers. Shake off every small vision. The King has spoken. The Father has declared. The nations are His. The ends of the earth are His possession. And the Spirit is moving. Let us rise to meet the moment. Let us not be found asleep while the King waits for His inheritance. Let us ask, and let us not stop asking until the earth resounds with praise, until every knee bows, until every heart burns with love for the Anointed One.
For the Lamb shall have the nations. The King shall possess the ends of the earth. And we shall be His hands and feet until the whole world is filled with His glory.
Amen.

O Most High God, Ancient of Days, Lord of Hosts and King of Glory, we lift our voices to You, the One who speaks and it is done, who commands and it stands fast. You sit enthroned above the circle of the earth, and all nations are as a drop in the bucket before You. You are the Sovereign Lord, whose throne is established in righteousness and justice, whose word cannot fail, whose counsel cannot be overturned. And today, O Lord, we remember Your decree, Your eternal promise to Your Son: “Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.”
Holy Father, we tremble before the power and weight of these words. You, the God of heaven and earth, have spoken not a suggestion, but a decree. You have pledged to Your Anointed, to the Christ, the inheritance of the nations and the claim of the entire earth. You have declared it—not as a possibility, but as a certainty. And now, in this appointed hour of history, we Your people come boldly before Your throne, not on our merit, but in the name of the One who was crucified, risen, and exalted far above every name.
We come as those redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, joined to Christ, heirs with Him, and sharers in His mission. We stand not as beggars, but as intercessors, lifting up this divine promise and pleading its fulfillment in our generation. O God, we ask—fulfill Your Word. Let the nations be His inheritance. Let the ends of the earth be His possession. Let every tribe and tongue bow before His lordship. Let every corner of the globe resound with the praise of Jesus.
We ask for the nations, Lord—not for our name, not for the pride of men, but for the glory of Your Son. We ask for the multitudes still bound in darkness, for the people who have never heard the name of Jesus. We ask for the unreached, the oppressed, the forgotten. We ask for the children growing up without light, for the elderly passing into eternity without hope. We ask for cities filled with idols, villages lost in vain tradition, regions where no gospel seed has yet been planted. Father, give them to Christ. Win them for His crown. Gather them into His fold. Let them know the love that was poured out at Calvary.
Lord Jesus, You were wounded for the transgressions of the nations. You were crushed for their iniquities. You bore their sins in Your body on the tree. You purchased men for God from every people and language and nation. You have already paid the price. You have already conquered the grave. Now receive what is rightfully Yours. Receive the inheritance promised from before the foundation of the world. Receive the praise of the peoples, the surrender of kings, the obedience of every nation.
Holy Spirit, we invite You—move with power across the earth. Stir hearts to pray with apostolic boldness. Set Your Church ablaze with zeal for the lost. Awaken sleeping congregations. Remove the scales from our eyes. Drive us out of comfort and into commission. Let us carry the gospel not only to our neighbors but to the nations. Let us preach Christ where He is not known. Let us disciple, baptize, and plant where there are no foundations. Let us rise with the confidence that the King is waiting to receive His full inheritance—and we are His messengers, His vessels, His hands and feet.
We ask for governments to bow, for rulers to kiss the Son, for policies to shift in favor of righteousness, for justice to roll down like waters, and for the kingdom of God to break into the systems of this world. Let revival burn through the halls of power. Let churches rise in every nation. Let the gospel shake the gates of hell until the earth is filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
And Father, begin with us. Let this asking not be empty ritual but burning reality. Let us weep for the nations as Christ wept over Jerusalem. Let us labor in intercession as Paul travailed for the churches. Let our hearts bleed with Your burden. Let our prayers pierce the heavens. Let our lives be poured out like drink offerings until the nations are won for Christ.
O God, this promise is not a distant hope—it is a living decree. It is Your will. It is Your Word. It is Your delight. And we stand on it with unshakable faith. Though the nations rage and the kings of the earth take counsel against You, You are not moved. You laugh from heaven, and You speak again: “I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” No power can dethrone Him. No enemy can resist Him. His reign is everlasting, and His inheritance is certain.
So we say, Yes and Amen. Let the nations come. Let the earth be claimed. Let the Son receive the fullness of what He died to redeem. And let the Church rise in power, in prayer, in purity, and in passion—until the whole world bows and every tongue confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
We pray this in the name of the Son, to whom the nations belong, and through whom all things shall be fulfilled.
Amen.
